Braxton
Braxton doing so much better and smiling about it!

Braxton's Story

Braxton was adopted from ARCBCR last year but came back to us this spring and within a few weeks developed an inability to swallow both food and water. As a result he lost almost half his body weight, quickly going from about 50 lbs. to under 30 lbs. After being diagnosed at Virginia Tech as having a very rare condition and being too frail for immediate surgery, Braxton underwent a procedure that placed a peg in his stomach which would allow his being fed and his strength to be built up in preparation for the needed surgery. Over the next several weeks his foster mother fed him with syringes round-the-clock through his stomach peg. He weighed 35 lbs. on the day of his surgery.

Braxton returned to his foster mother after being at Virginia Tech for 6 days in a much deteriorated state. His surgery has not produced the results hoped for, but, after 2-1/2 weeks back "home," he has gained several pounds and is able to supplement his syringe feedings with very small bites of canned dog food fed to him by hand. Braxton still cannot drink water or lap any liquids without choking which panics him. Our goal is to find a way that dear Braxton can get both the nourishment and hydration he needs, after gaining additional weight, so his stomach peg can eventually be removed.

Braxton wants so much to be the active border collie he once was! He shares his foster home with 2 female border collies who invite him to play, something he can only do with his foster mother's supervision. Throughout his convolescence Braxton has been very cooperative and grateful, a model patient. No matter how he badly he feels, his spirit to live shines through his soulful brown eyes. Braxton's genteel and loving nature has charmed everyone he has met at Virginia Tech, 2 local vet hospitals, and his foster mother's place of employment and neighborhood. To date his surgical and vet bills have exceeded $3,500. Any contribution you are willing to make toward Braxton' s care fund would be greatly appreciated.

Dixie
Dixie is a shy but sweet little girl

Dixie's Story

1/07/10 - Dixie will not be available for another month as she has tested postive for heartworms and Lyme's disease and will need to go thru treatment... Angels needed to help with her vet expenses.... This little girl did not deserve the life she was given prior to rescue. She has already had to bear having puppies and then being dumped in a shelter, help us make her renaming many years, MUCH better, filled with love and attention. Dixie is a little shy but she is very sweet, easy going, and just happy to be somewhere safe right now. Once she knows you are good people, you have a friend that will love you. She has been a little worn out and reserved coming into rescue, but we just know, soon she will once again be the happy, go lucky girl she should be soon! Do you have room in your heart for this great little girl? We hope so!

Dash
Dash showing how well behaved he is!

Dash's Story

Dash was picked up in a local shelter being somewhat skittish but very sweet. His foster Mom went to meet this dear boy and instantly fell in love with him, that was Dec. 23rd, just in time for Christmas! We knew Dash was heartworm positive and not neutered so we expected him to be a project... well, it turns out that Dash is wonderful and all the things that a Border Collie should be! He LOVES toys and will fetch until he just drops (YES, heartworm treatment will not be fun for any of us), he is housebroken, tolerates his crate very well and settles very nicely in the house. Not to mention after an hour of so of settling in, he was a total love bug and sofa cuddler! Unfortuantely for all of us, on Jan. 3rd, Dash had a seizure, we do pray that it's something we can control very easily with diet and if needed medications but we are monitoring the situation with him and are more than thankful it happened once he was safely in a foster home... so needless to say, Dash will not be available for some time, but please consider donating to help cover his vet expenses! This dear boy deserves sooo much more than being left in a shelter where decisions were having to be made for him... Dash was our unexpected Christmas guest in 2009, we have promised him that Christmas 2010 will be even better for him... for us, he was the best gift ever!! There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a rescued animal's eyes light up with joy at the knowing that they are loved.... it's the reason we do what we do!

Sadie
Sadie is such a smart girl!

Sadie's Story

Sadie was pulled from a fairly local shelter where they were asking for help because she “didn’t show well” at the shelter. Sadie is a BEAUTIFUL girl with a couple of behavioral issues that we determined could be worked out as she was wanting to please but didn’t know actually how yet. Sadie did not have a good life prior to rescue and was found wondering the streets for some time before Animal Control could catch her. ARCBCR rescued Sadie and she was taken in to be spayed, heartworm tested and x-rayed right after coming into or program; she tested positive for Lyme disease (she was immediately put on meds) and fairly severe hip dysplasia, but overall in decent shape. A couple weeks later, Sadie became very sick and was taken into the vet… where she was diagnosed with Parvo!! Sadie is NOT a puppy and in all aspects should not have come down with this deadly disease. Sadie has pulled thru (we were all concerned if she would) but in the wake of treatment, was left a hefty vet bill, close to $2,800… any help you can give is very much appreciated… even $20 adds up to a great deal when given by many!
