Atticus is a one-year old Border Collie mix who found himself returned to the shelter when the family who raised him didn't have time for him anymore. Atticus is house-broken, crate-trained, and knows some basic manners. However, he still has some puppy exuberance and would benefit greatly from an obedience course with his new family. He enjoys playing fetch, tug-of-war, and snuggling up on the couch with his humans. Atticus loves other dogs but is way too interested in cats so he must be adopted to a feline-free home. In his previous home, Atticus lived with a 12-year old child and he would do great in a home with older kids. He may be a bit too jumpy/mouthy for younger kids. Atticus is being fostered in downtown Richmond and has been a little nervous with all the city noise. When he first came into foster care he was too afraid to go outside. Now he has gone on 4-mile hikes and swimming with his foster family. He likes to go on walks in parks and quiet neighborhoods, so we think he will be happiest in a more suburban or rural environment. He loves exploring trails and the mountains. Atticus is a great mix of a dog who will happily tag along for adventures like camping and hiking, but is also happy to just snuggle up and hang out indoors. He is low energy for a puppy his age and has a nice "off switch" in the house. He happily entertains himself with toys, he won't be following you around begging for attention. Atticus needs a home that is willing to give him a little bit of time to settle in and fine tune his manners, but he will reward you with a lot of love and companionship on your future adventures!
